TWO FROM SEVEN for Big Band- This piece is a re-thinking of the second movement from Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony Op. 92 written in 1811. Beethoven commented that he thought it was one of his best works. The orchestral version has been used numerous times for numerous purposes. One of the more recent uses was in the 2011 film THE KING’S SPEECH. It is a slow burn style piece. It starts small with a relentless rhythmic and harmonic ostinato that builds and builds to a big band shout chorus. There is a trumpet solo indicated, but the solo could be played by any member of the band. There are optional parts for vibes and tuba. The work is not overly difficult and could be mastered by a high school band with little effort. Paramount to a good performance is articulation and dynamics. Also, the blending of muted brass with saxophones should be considered. There are no doublings. Leade Tpt C6 (D6 opt.)

Hopewell Endurance is the fourth movement of the suite. The Eastern Cape, where Hopewell Farm is located in South Africa, is a borderline semi-arid area that can suffer from periodic drought. This is not only difficult for the animals, but can also sometimes be a strain for the people. Exploring the land on the farm, there are signs of past droughts. And yet, the farm continues to thrive, no matter the times. While Hopewell Farm was not the first farm Eddie ever visited, it is more common for him to see the farms from outside the fences. As a guest at Hopewell, Eddie had many opportunities to explore the land, accompanying his brother-in-law as he took care of the cattle. Some of this was on foot and sometimes they drove (off road) across the property in a bakkie. The scenes, the smells, the sounds, all of it calls out gladly to welcome you. Well, more than a bit...As a Guitar Teacher I often have to teach beginners how to read music, and of course the seven names of the musical notes can be made to spell words. Like CABBAGE.This, then, is a little piece of kitchen-based nonsense, cooking up a rather unappetising dish comprising cabbage, egg, beef and a lot, lot more cabbage. Iâ??ve arranged it (if that is the word) to include nods to the renaissance and baroque periods.The scores contain mark-ups to show where a particular player has an item of food in their motif.As well as EGG, youâ??ll find some GEG (thatâ??s scrambled egg) and a BAD EGG (and some sad music). Youâ??ll also find that the recipe includes a helping or two of BEEF.Bach comes in for a special mention, as thereâ??s a fugue-like section where the subject comes in a fifth away from the starting key (which Iâ??ve loosely interpreted as being a recipe in a foreign language) and thereâ??s some stretti (well, just about) at the end, when the fugue subjects overlap a tiny, tiny amount. And we also pay homage to the pedal section of an organ, where the CABBAGE subject comes in down low at half the speed of the original.The final, jazzy, chord at the end contains seven notes that collectively spell CABBAGE.Guitar 4 is supplied in treble and bass clefs - either or both will work in a large ensemble.So there are lots of teaching points, lots of things to ask the audience to listen out for, and a lot of mischief in a compact piece.The musical refrain CABBAGE is not the greatest motif to work with, but on reflection, when you have this much cabbage, itâ??s much better to listen to it than have to eat it...I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. Prelude II from George Gershwin's Three Preludes for piano composed in 1926 and transcribed for Bb Clarinet and two Bassoons. Gershwin referred to the piece as a sort of blues lullaby. The second Prelude is distinctly influenced by jazz and the piece begins with a subdued melody winding its way above a smooth, steady bassline. The harmonies and melodies of this piece are built on thirds, emphasizing both the interval of the seventh and the major/minor duality of the blues scale. In the second section, the key, tempo, and thematic material change and the opening melody and bass return in the final section. It Never Rains is a short piece written in the summer of 2010 that was commissioned by Jim Fox for the Californian label Cold Blue Music and is dedicated to them. Learn how to compose chord progressions like a pro while having fun and playing!Objective:Teach yourself the seven chords that belong to each type of scale. Rather than bombard you with a thousand guitar chords (which is easy to happen when browsing the internet or playing random songs), I'd rather show how a select few chords are working well together in common contexts. The hope is that you would then be able to see this happening in all 12 keys. What Scales/Modes are being harmonized? C Major (+jazz version) A (natural) minor (+jazz version) A harmonic minor (+jazz version) B Locrian D Dorian E Phyrigian F Lydian G Mixolydian Features: Slowly increases in physical and theoritcal difficulty at the same time. Many music theory books seem abstract and impractical whereas these chord charts show music theory applied to guitar. These chord progressions are a great composition aid. The Beatles and jazz musicians use modal chord progressions to give their music uniqueness. It's almost as if one note is wrong intentionally. Practicality and flow on guitar is emphasized more then music theory conciseness. Letter names are not in a perfect order (as that is sometimes impossible for the guitar to do). Sometimes a more complex chord is opted for because it's actually easier to play physically. Tips: Order = Blue, Yellow, Red, Blue for stereotypical classical style chord progressions. Rock and blues often do more of a chord succession; red going to yellow happens often, even though it is breaking a rule. The professional names for blue, yellow, red: tonic, predominant, dominant respectively. I did not invent this theoretical concept, but I am probably one of the few musician's to color code the categories regularly. The colors explain the situation elegantly; the professional words seem like abstract PhD education, whereas saying blue is relaxing and red is uncomfortable is something a child can understand quickly. One fantastic tip I hardly hear anyone say: it doesn't so much matter that you play the same chord as the other musician in your ensemble (unless you are getting paid to do exactly that). It matters more that you simply play the same color as them. You will have a deeper understanding of how music works if you think like this, and mistakes will no longer be seen as mistakes. What happens when a C Major and A minor chord are played at the same time? Hardly anything! It's just a Am7! Big whoop! It isn't a horrendous sounding mistake. Circle a key on the circle of fifths. Now circle the two keys next to it (-1b, +1#). This leads to six chords that belong diatonically to the first key you circled! Memorizing these will allow you to better predict what composers are about to do, especially if you know ahead of time that the song does not change key. Get away from the echo chamber of common are arugably bad cowboy chords and be able to build your own.

About the Taiwan Fantasia, van Deursen states: After having lived in Taipei for a number of years, I learned many of the local folk and popular songs. Some of the melodies are exceptionally beautiful, and my idea was to somehow combine all the elements that have made up my musical experiences over these years - Chinese melodies, western orchestral music and jazz; I wanted to see if these songs could survive with a totally different harmonic structure and concept. My original goal was to write a simple arrangement of the two songs, but quickly I discovered more melodies building upon the original ones and thus the Variations were born. Composed in 1995, this work of about 10 minutes in length is in one continuous movement, but is divided into seven short sections of contrasting moods including two cadenzas, for Trumpet and Trombone. The music is appropriate for advanced performers. Parts in C and B-flat are supplied for the Trumpets. A recording of Taiwan Fantasia can be purchased on iTunes from the album by the Yeh Shu Han Brass Quintet.
